“If somebody offers you an amazing opportunity but you are not sure you can do it, say yes – then learn how to do it later.” – Richard Branson

When you want something you just have to go out and get it.  You have to be open to new opportunities and not let the fear of the unknown stop you.

I was recently offered an amazing opportunity to develop a course for Essence Magazine.  When we started the project I was 8 months pregnant with twins.  The thing about pregnancy is once you get past 35 or 36 weeks, your baby can come at any time and the doctors won’t stop labor, and twins typically come early. Needless to say I was scared, but I didn’t want to say “no” to such an amazing opportunity. Therefore, I let the Essence team know that I was pregnant and then said “yes” to developing the course.

I knew that I needed to move fast so I thought about what I had to do to ensure that the project was completed on time and that I wasn’t the source of a delay.  I looked at the timeline, cleared all unnecessary activities from my schedule and committed to submitting all of my deliverables early. I even worked on revisions to my course curriculum while I was in labor. I literally worked for 5 hours while in early labor. Then after my water broke, was admitted to the labor room, and received my epidural I finished the remaining revisions. I never missed one deadline despite being pregnant and giving birth. There are no excuses.

I’m so grateful for the opportunity to work with Essence and I’m happy that I didn’t let my fear of going into labor mid project cause me to say no. Instead I identified how I could make it work. I’m also grateful that the team believed that I could finish the course.

I hope that this story helps to inspire you to stretch and say “yes” to more opportunities. Think about how you can make things work instead of thinking about all the reasons why they won’t. When you adopt this mindset, you will open yourself up to way more experiences that you ever thought possible.
