When I think about the 4th of July, I think of the word “Freedom.” 

As I consider what that means, I understand that freedom may have the word “free” in there, but freedom comes at a cost.  I’m grateful for those who came before us who gave their lives so we can live in freedom. I’m also grateful for the sacrifice of those who continue to fight for freedom. 

Ronald Reagan once said, “Freedom is never more than one generation away from extinction. We didn’t pass it to our children in the bloodstream. It must be fought for, protected, and handed on for them to do the same.”  

This quote resonates with me on the 4th of July, but I also think that it’s profoundly important to our personal lives as well.  

We are never more than 1 generation away from falling away from the Lord.  We see this in the Bible in the lives of King Asa, his son King Jehoshaphat, and his grandson King Jehoram.  King Asa decided to turn from the wicked ways of some of his ancestors and live for the Lord.  His son King Jehoshaphat did as well.  However, his grandson King Jehoram returned to the bondage of rebellion and it had profound consequences for the people of Judah and his family.

Therefore, just like we fight to maintain our country’s freedom, we must also fight for our freedom to walk in the freedom of the Lord by constantly turning from sin, fleeing from temptation, and choosing Jesus daily.  There is freedom in following the Lord, obeying Him, and living for Him.

Therefore, we need to ask ourselves these questions:

  1. Am I a person (generation) who is committed to creating generational blessings and breaking generational curses?  
  2. Am I working to build up the kingdom of God to glorify Him, and to do the work of the Lord in my spheres of influence?
  3. What am I doing with my freedom – the freedom from the punishment of sin bought at a price of the blood of Jesus shed on Calvary? 
  4. What are the top-three areas of my life that I must repent and reconcile with God so I can live in true freedom and remove myself from this world’s evil ways? (Note: I know this may seem out of place. However, this question is so important because if you are going to live in true freedom, you must be open and honest about the areas you require repentance. without repentance, we are out of alignment with the Will of God, and therefore our journey in entrepreneurship will be much more rocky and cloudy than necessary.) 

The answers to these questions are linked to how we view life.  Psalm 90:12 says, “So teach us to number our days that we may get a heart of wisdom.” Ephesians 5:15 says, “Look carefully then how you walk, not as unwise but as wise, making the most use of the time, because the days are evil.”

We must recognize that our days are numbered as God has given each one of us a certain amount of time on this earth, and while we are here we are admonished to maximize those days doing the work that God has called us to do. 

Therefore, the time is now to walk in freedom and to do the work that God put us on this earth to do!

Let me ask you this.
