With the summer in full effect, and the social gatherings all around us, I started to wonder which bottles of wine would be great to bring to a friend’s house without getting the side eye. As professional women, we want to have amazing experiences and have some knowledge about wine, but how do you know which wines to buy without breaking the bank?
Since I wanted to know and because I will drink a bottle of Five Oaks ($3/bottle on sale at Rite Aid), but will very rarely bring it to a social gathering unless I know the host drinks it as well, I decided to go to Whole Foods to research their most popular bottles of wine under $10. In addition to the research at Whole Foods in Detroit, I also asked my wine enthusiast friends to see what wines they buy that cost less than $10.
Here is what I found.
My wine enthusiast friend recommends the following wines:
Ménage a Trois Wines. When I was at Whole Foods I found a bottle of California Red Wine on Sale for $9.99. I also found a bottle of California White Wine for $10.
Vinho Verde. Vinho Verde is a type of wine from the Vihno Verde region of Portugal. Over the last few years it has risen in popularity because it is an inexpensive, easy-drinking wine. You can find many different types of Vihno Verde for less than $10. The experts recommend that the Vihno Verde wines are best in their youth, so look for the freshest bottles of wine.
Castello del Poggio Moscato. This wine varies between $8-10 depending on where you buy it.
My favorite brands of wines are:
Cupcake Wines. I love the Cupcake brand of wine. I’ve only had the Sauvignon Blanc, Riesling, and Chardonnay. I can usually find these wines for less than $10. Whole Foods carries the Chardonnay for $8.99. Sometimes you will find this brand for $11.99 depending on the varietal, but they are frequently on sale, which will bring the price below $10.
Grand Traverse Wine. Grand Traverse has some amazing Riesling wines. I have had all 4 varieties available at Whole Foods and I’ve enjoyed each one. They vary in price between $9.99 – $14.99.
I also really enjoy the 3 Wishes Brand at Whole Foods, and usually keep a stash at home. These are available for $3. My optometrist friend told me about this wine. She swears by it. I spoke to the sales associate at Whole Foods and she told me that this wine is very popular. For $3 it is worth a try!
Whole Foods Research:
I asked the sales associate at Whole Foods to show me the best bottles of wine for under $10, and she directed me to many different red and white wines from a variety of vineyards.
Quail Creek Wines $6
Harthill Farms $6
Robertson Winery $6.99
Riven Rock $6.99
She also advised me that the Whole Foods Spanish wine selection was great and that the brands that they had in store were all less than $10.
Protocolo: $7.99 & Opera Prima $4.99
Don Simon $4 & El Sancho Escudero $4
Next time you are looking for that perfect bottle of wine to bring to a party or relax with a glass at home, now you know which brands taste great without breaking the bank. I hope that you enjoy!
