FNPhenomenal Mom is a series that I am doing to highlight Single Moms who are amazing moms and who are also rocking it out personally in their careers, entrepreneurship, or in the community. I think that it is important to show other single moms that it is possible to raise amazing children without sacrificing who you are as a woman. These interviews are motivational, but also include practical advice on how to structure your life for success, financial management tips, and techniques to teach your children about finances. We are all in this journey together. My hope is to highlight other moms, share best practices, and in turn provide hope, encouragement, and motivation to help you to succeed and to define your own phenomenal.

What do you do (entrepreneur, career, etc.) and why is it important?
I’m an author, speaker, and creator of the #WeAllHaveAStory Movement where we encourage individuals to share their story in order to inspire and create change in the lives of others. I know the power in sharing your story. It can free you from the weight of your past. It can also touch someone who may in the same situation. Knowing that you made it can give them the strength to make it as well.
What would you tell your younger self that would have been instrumental during your journey?
I would tell myself that there will be people who will come into your life who will hurt you. However, don’t stop trusting, and don’t stop listening to your inner voice. You got this!
What is the single best piece of advice that you have learned?
Someone told me that you are not grown until you turn 40. That is so true, because by the time you make it to 40 you have been through so many things. You’ve learned some tough lessons, and you’ve made some sacrifices. You also know who you are and what is important to you.
How can single moms be great moms and still pursue their dreams and goals?
Being a great mom isn’t what you do; it is who you are. All of the skills that you use to nurture, educate, guide, and love your children can be used in pursuing your dreams. They are not separate, but instead are one in the same.
What does the word “phenomenal” mean to you?
Phenomenal is not something that you run across every day. When something is phenomenal you stop and take notice. An experience with something phenomenal is life changing.
What is your best advice for moms?
Find your support system. Parenting is tough. It is tougher when you are a single parent. I’m a single parent with a child who has special needs. The thing that got me through was knowing who I could lean on or talk to when I was exhausted, frustrated or overwhelmed.
What is one key money principle that you live your life by?
We live in an instant gratification society. We want everything right now. I’m a firm believer in teaching children the value of long-term saving goals. For example, these savings goals can include saving for a project or activity to do during summer break.
What is your favorite book and why?
My favorite book right now is the book I co-authored, Shift On: Twenty Stories of Turning Trials into Triumph! There were 20 co-authors included in the book project, which means that each chapter has a different story. It is impossible to read the entire book and not find yourself inside at least one of the chapters.
