FNPhenomenal SIngle Mom Spotlight

FNPhenomenal Mom is a series that I am doing to highlight Single Moms who are amazing moms and who are also rocking it out personally in their careers, entrepreneurship, or in the community.  I think that it is important to show other single moms that it is possible to raise amazing children without sacrificing who you are as a woman.  These interviews are motivational, but also include practical advice on how to structure your life for success, financial management tips, and techniques to teach your children about finances.  We are all in this journey together.  My hope is to highlight other moms, share best practices, and in turn provide hope, encouragement, and motivation to help you to succeed and to define your own phenomenal.

FNPhenomenal Mom Spotlight. I am a Phenomenal Mom

What do you do and why is it important?

I am a small business owner. I started my own consulting firm, Avenu Consulting, LLC, which specializes in consulting in the areas of politics, public relations, and business & nonprofit development. I am also the founder & executive director of Girls Leadership Society, a nonprofit organization dedicated to educating, empowering and emboldening middle & high school girls to become the next generation of leaders.

What would you tell your younger self that would have been instrumental during your journey?

I would tell my younger self to stay focused on my personal goals.

What is the single best piece of advice that you have learned?

It is ok to ask for help and to rely on others. As single mothers, we are everything to our children and are their source of survival. But we tend to forget that we need someone to rely on, but instead, we choose to try to do it all ourselves. I have the Superwoman personality.  I want to do it all and be everything to everyone. However, I have to remind myself that it is ok to ask for help.

How can single moms be great moms and still pursue their dreams and goals?

First, you have to realize that you don’t have to choose between giving up on your dreams or sacrificing your child(ren). However, if you want to be a great mother and pursue your passion, you definitely have to plan, plan, plan! Set goals and timeframes to accomplish small achievements one step at a time. Time management is a must!

What are your guiding principles?

My Christian values guide me. Both Colossians 3:23 and Ephesians 6:7 speak about doing work wholeheartedly as if you are doing the work for the Lord. Therefore, I keep that in mind with work I am doing whether that is my business, my nonprofit, or other community work where I’m involved.

What does the word “phenomenal” mean to you?

Phenomenal means extraordinary, great & impressive in an unusual way.  I also think that is also means being strong and bold.

What is your best advice for moms?

Don’t give up on your dreams. You CAN pursue your passion and be a great mother!

Single Moms dont give up on your dreams

How do you stay aligned with your passion/purpose?

I plan like crazy, set goals & timeframes for myself, connect with other people who are purpose driven, and work to stay connected with God and let him guide me.

What is one key money principle that you live your life by?

Budgeting is key to being financially stable. Planning ahead financially is a must!

How do you do what you love, provide for your children, look great, and still watch your money?

It all comes down to budgeting, creating multiple streams of income and not being afraid to ask for help when you need it. My child goes to a private school, is a competitive athlete in an expensive sport, and I love looking fabulous, lol. Therefore, to support my fashion needs, a few times a month I work at one of my favorite places to shop. This allows me to get a store discount and provides me with additional income.

How do you teach your child(ren) about money?

I make my daughter do chores to earn money. I also teach her how to use her allowance to save, pay tithes, and to limit her spending to the things that she really wants.

What is your favorite book and why?

48 Laws of Power. Although this is a book about mastering the game of power, it also gives a lot of wisdom on how to interact with people while on your way to success. This book has helped me to understand how to work with many different types of people.
